Navigating tricky topics: War
If you can listen to your students non-judgmentally, not only will you get insight into what they are thinking and feeling, but they might, too. Answers to big questions aren’t always necessary. Simply listening with an open, prayerful heart and acknowledging their feelings of confusion can be helpful by itself
God's Big Story
What makes a science teacher with a Biblical worldview different from a secular science teacher? As a Christian, what are the things I want my high school students to know? And more importantly, what is the Big Story I’m telling?
Sometimes it's just hard...
There are days when the good bits of teaching get clouded. Weeks when the joy of seeing young lives grow feels small compared to all the things that are feeling hard. There are times when laughter with colleagues is displaced by a quiet cry in the bathroom. Months when the routine is less about using our gifts and more about an endless list of fire-fighting the classroom disruption, the paperwork, the expectation of others and the criticism around.
ACT's Response to the Government's Conversion Therapy Consultation
The following letter was sent to Nadhim Zahawi MP, Secretary of State for Education, on 15th January 2021 to express the ACT Board’s concern at the potential impact of the government’s proposed conversion therapy ban on educators who hold to the orthodox Christian view of sexuality and gender.
Teachers and 'conversion therapy'
The government is currently consulting on banning so-called ‘conversion therapy’. More specifically, the question is not whether to ban conversion therapy, but how to ban it. The government proposes that children under 18 years of age should not be able to consent to ‘conversion therapy’, no matter how much they want it. Just what will this mean in practice?
True Diversity?
All students in the classroom are valued. Their views are important and their voices should be equally heard. Whether cold calling or following a ‘hands up’ approach, no teacher would be looked upon favourably if they only checked in on or listened to a select group of students. Claims of favouritism don’t go down well in schools. Yet on an ideological level, in many schools today there are certain voices that are heard more than others. Certain views are given more amplification by the official line of the school. Certain ideas dominate. Those who disagree are not called upon but left with their hands in the air.
European Educators' Christian Association – EURECA
EurECA was formed in the mid-90s to bring together Christian educators in state-run schools across Europe. The original intention was to organise an annual conference to foster international friendships, promote and share good, biblically informed educational practice and above all, to glorify God across European education. Today we are still trying to do the same things.

UCCF: The Christian Unions launches the Teaching Network
UCCF has existed for over 100 years to help students to see Jesus as Lord of their whole lives; worthy of living for and speaking about. Students are sent by local churches, join CUs on university campuses and live alongside those they find there. These students share their lives and of course therefore their faith. And for 100 years many, many bold students have called many, many more to consider following Jesus.
Confessions of a Stressed-out Teacher
I took a break from my teaching at one point to pursue further studies. While studying, I worked part-time as a waiter. I missed many things about the teaching environment: interacting with colleagues, watching students learn, preparing for class, and sometimes even grading. Yet, there was one thing I did not miss at all: I NEVER had to take work home!
The plot against religious education
Faith is not the declining force that some secularists believe or indeed desire it to be. Even here in the UK, we have our growing and vibrant black-led churches; increasingly present mosques, temples and gurudwaras; and believers arriving from Eastern and Central Europe.
The spiritual landscape of FE – deserted, forgotten or ripe for harvest?
The Government has tried to work hard to lift FE into the political spotlight – as the Education Secretary said last year in a stern voice “FE is not Forgotten Education. It is Further Education“. The sentiment is commendable, but the reality remains that most of the UK population have no real idea of the incredible depth and range of FE provision in the community and this stands equally true for our churches.
Open Letter regarding Rev Dr Bernard Randall
Mainstream culture, including that of many schools, has moved from being indifferent to Christianity – seeing it as outdated or irrelevant – to now seeing aspects of it as damaging and even dangerous. Admitting to being a Bible believing Christian is hard for an educator, especially when accusations of holding ‘ideologies that want to close minds or narrow opportunity’ abound, and ‘muscular liberalism’ is promoted by Ofsted.
Preparing to fail?
Almost 18 years ago, I set out on a long (and winding) drive to West Wales. It was a trip that would come to be the most profoundly important journey in my life as a young adult.
Gender Dysphoria: The Medical Context
The subject of transgenderism, especially with respect to children, has frequently been in the news over the past few months. It is a subject which invokes a variety of emotional responses and needs to be addressed wisely and with compassion. I will attempt to give a brief overview of the subject and suggest some further reading.
How Much Do We Need Each Other As Christians In Education?
So many of us need to connect with others who understand the challenges we face as Christian teachers. Sometimes even those in our churches struggle to comprehend the unique pressures Christians face in our schools. In our recent enforced isolation, the opportunities for divine connection could be reduced. But we know the Lord wants us to find vital, inspiring connections, which supply our souls, and help us to do our work joyfully and courageously as his body.
Mind your mindset- Cultivating a growth mindset in your students
Failures. Setbacks. Obstacles
When we read these words, feelings of sadness, defeat, and pain may rush to the surface as we recall challenging situations. They aren’t always easy to think about, are they?
