Schools Minister David Laws has condemned the industrial action, as tens of thousands of teachers in England and Wales hold a one-day walkout. NUT general secretary Christine Blower says teachers' workload has to be reduced so that people stay in the profession. She claims that there has been no progress in talks and that due to the pressures on teachers in the form of long hours, declining pay and rising retirement age, there has to be industrial action. However Mr Laws pointed out that the NUT is just one of seven teachers' unions and that all are in talks with the government. "Six of them are not taking industrial action today."
