Nearly 10 children in every class are leaving Hull primary schools without the expected level of literacy.

The organisers of Hull's first children's literacy festival hope it'll encourage more young people in the city to read.

Next month the Big Malarkey Festival will bring together writers, cartoonists and puppeteers including Steve Cole and Julian Clary.

Michelle Alford is director of library services for Hull Culture and Leisure:

"It's about bringing those stories alive, giving them access to some of the best writers in the country that will inspire them. If they don't want to go on and be writers themselves, we want to encourage them to read those writers materials.
