Project Manager – The Zong Project.

Role Purpose:

To project-manage the preparations for and the 2019 voyages of the slave ship Zong.

Line Manager:

Named Trustee

Hours of work:

64 hours a month worked flexibly Fixed Term 1st April 2018 – 30th September 2019

Rate of pay:

£15.60 an hour paid monthly


Annual Leave 98 hours per annum inclusive of Bank Holiday Entitlement

Place of work:

Home based with extensive UK travel

Planning and development:

  • Update Line Manager Weekly.
  • Advise the trustees on all issues with a monthly report.
  • Attend parts of MJR Trustee meetings that are relevant.
  • Develop partnerships with external agencies/partners to support the organisations strategic development.

Service delivery:

  • Pull together all pre-work completed by trustees in preparation for the 2019 voyage.
  • Establish personal contact with all stakeholders for 2019 voyage – including ship owners, port contacts, school contacts, church and community contacts.
  • Provide information for MJR website and social media to get publicity and info out to a wider audience.
  • Engage with local and national media as appropriate.
  • Undertake speaking engagements in key ports as required and work alongside local groups.
  • Keep up to date financial records of all expenditure and pass on all paperwork to the Bookkeeper.  Any expenditure over £500 to be agreed by the Board. At all times procurement procedures as prescribed by National Lottery to be followed.
  • Facilitate publicity for the voyage.
  • Facilitate the exhibition for the voyage.
  • In the month after the voyage pull together all the ‘loose’ ends – ensure all outstanding invoices are paid – draw up a directory of all contacts – and write up a biography of the project to be presented as a record for supporters, interested parties and funders.
