Theresa May backs down on £27bn education legacy funding.

Theresa May has backed down on a demand for a £27 billion cash boost for the education budget which she had hoped would form part of her "legacy".

Sources said the Prime Minister had dropped insistence on a three-year funding plan for schools which she was attempting to secure just weeks before leaving Downing Street.

No 10 and the Treasury are now discussing proposals for a one-off set of cash increases amounting to around £9 billion.

The £27 billion plan, revealed by The Sunday Telegraph last week, had been strongly opposed by Philip Hammond and other senior ministers over concerns it would unfairly bind the hands of her successor.
