Leadership style should depend on the school

'My first job as a headteacher was a baptism of fire. I started primary teaching in 1994 and worked across different primary schools in the West Midlands – then I got a job as deputy head at a school in Solihull. I probably wouldn't have got the position elsewhere because I was relatively inexperienced, but this was a particularly difficult school and I don't think many people went for the job. Almost a week in, the head went on maternity leave, making me as acting head without having had any experience as a deputy. Luckily, I had a mentor down the road who I called on a daily basis for advice.'
