Child Abuse Inquiry.

Dame Lowell Goddard, the New Zealand judge who resigned on Thursday as chair of the £100 million Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA), did not leave her post voluntarily but was effectively fired it is now reported.

It is not my place to get into the arguments about salary, allowances etc etc these just cloud the main issue how can we protect our children and young people from abuse.

My view is that this topic is too important to wait five or ten years for a report. This resignation gives us opportunity to look again at this Inquiry.

I call for the Inquiry to be split into two:

  1. An Inquiry to look at what went wrong within Local Authorities and Police Child Protection Teams – this Inquiry to make an initial report and recommendations within a year and a full report within two years. This matter is this urgent to protect our children and young people.

  1. A second Inquiry to look at all the other aspects and receive submissions from victims of abuse – this may well take longer so that lessons can be learned.

We must better protect our children and young people now and ensure we spend sufficient monies doing so.
